Understanding the History of Australian Interracial Romance

Have you ever looked into some of the history of Australian interracial marriages? You may be surprised to know how recently the fight for interracial love was fought, in particular, regarding mixed race children. Consider for example the term “stolen generations”, a phrase that is consistently brought up when discussing the culture and history of Australian interracial dating.

Stolen Generations

This expression refers to mixed race children of Australian Aboriginals and Torres Strait Island who were removed by authorities during most of the 20th century, specifically from the years 1905 to 1969. When the 1970s came around, the gradual decline of this racist attitude came along, though it continued to be a conflict for some time. For example, some claimed that full-blooded aboriginals hated mixed race children by white men, but some of this was propaganda. By 2007 however, the Parliament had apologized for the behaviors of the previous generation. Interestingly, the Stolen Generation has been the discussion for much debate and was even featured in some movies over the past few years, namely “Australia” in 2008.

A Great New Trend

According to some statistics, including The Guardian, the rates for interracial marriages are increasing in Australia. Furthermore, rates among aboriginal men and women marrying non-indigenous Australians is also on the rise. According to a 2006 report, 52 percent of men and 55 percent of women were married to non-Aboriginal Australians. Intermarriage rates were also increasing near the city, allegedly up to 70 percent in bigger cities like Sydney.

As recently as the 1960s, racism was prevalent but over the past 40 years, there has been a significant increase in interracial marriages and even more relationships showing that indeed times have changed. There has certainly been great progress made. However, anecdotally speaking, some people claim that interracial romance is not as prevalent in Australia as in the UK or America. Is this true?

A Different System?

For one thing, it’s important to remember that Australian government entities don’t actually collect interracial marriage statistics, only the country of birth. Therefore, there may actually be more racially different couples than is reported and with higher populations of native Asians, Indians and Africans, it is a sure bet. One statistic says that 45 percent of all marriages are made up of couples where one partner comes from a different country.
Others speculate that it’s really only lower in comparison to the United Kingdom because Australia hasn’t had as much Westernization as the UK has. However, over the next few decades, like many other countries the predicted immigration numbers are high and it is believed that this will also influence the number of interracial couples.

The history of interracial dating in Australia is certainly rich and thanks to progressive views and legislation we now have an unprecedented opportunity to explore the relationships we want. Don’t take that victory for granted! Why not look into interracial dating in your neck of the woods, by using an Australian interracial dating site? You will never have to “settle” ever again!
